Spur gears are simple, cylindrical, precision gears with parallel shafts. They transmit movement between parallel shafts. This versatile gear is widely used in a range of mechanical power transmission applications; has a simple yet effective straight tooth design. It is the most common gear type.

Spur gear teeth are parallel to the central axis of the gear. Therefore, the connection is more gradual and not as uninterrupted as that of a helical gear. They are also known as straight cut gears.
